Racing to make up time

After the crash, we met and regrouped and after deciding to continue we had lost approximately 15 hours off-bike in Taos. It was time to go after the comeback. We were down around 9th place and with three people, rode the next 16 hours with one person down. I started out solo for 40 miles riding over 3000 feet, then handed off to Mike who did another 30 or so miles before we began shorter rotations again. We had several of the fastest splits coming out of the mountains and into the windy flats (not all tail winds).

About La Sierra. I believe the school was closed due to a shrinking student population.

I don't know the exact details concerning the demise of the PE program - I heard a few rumors about why it didn't go forward after the school closed.

However, I don't want to openly speculate on teachers responsible for the P.E. program and what might have occurred ... sorry, I don't know who you are and even tho it was a long time ago I don't want to write old gossip.

In 1962 JFK and Bud Wilkinson did want to use LS as a model for the Nation. I assume other high schools were also appraised. The unique thing about LS in those years was the national recognition.

Aside from several magazine articles and guys doing push-ups on TV, there was demos for the military - apparently our standards were more than theirs.

Why wasn't the program used more vigorous throughout the Nation? The 60s were far different than the 80s. Things radically changed, Kennedy was killed, Vietnam, etc..
